By: Elizabeth McKaken

A defiant teen can make the lives of their parents very challenging and difficult, in addition to making theirs complicated. People in their adolescent years face almost all the major challenges they encounter during their lifetime. In addition to peer pressure experienced at school, sky high expectations from parents can prove to be very heavy for the child to carry.

A defiant teen at home can make any parent get frustrated. However, handling this phase of life in a mature and balanced way is the trait of a good parent. The good news though, is that it is not as difficult as people perceive it to be. There are a few parenting strategies that you can put to use in order to handle your defiant teen and bring them back on the right track.

Use humor

There is nothing in the world that humor cannot do. Imbibing humor in your conversations with your defiant teen will help you diffuse a probably explosive situation. You can discuss topics like drugs, alcohol and sex with ease if you can create a conducive atmosphere which will help you teenager be more responsive and receptive. There can be no better way to get them to speak frankly to you about their feelings and emotions than inducing humor in your discussions.

Avoid hypocrisy

Parents should be able to practice what they preach. You defiant teen will cease to cash in on an opportunity when you don't stand true to the values you are trying to instill in him. Your child will look up to you and emulate your actions. Hence, stay true to your principles and set the right example. Rather than giving them a piece of your mind when you catch them being dishonest, sit with them and find out why you defiant teen resorted to that behavior in the first place. In addition to bringing about permanent resolution to your problem, it will help your control the situation effectively.

Being an active parent helps

The best way to handle a defiant teen is by being an active parent. Help before being asked, listen before being told and understand before it is asked - this is how active parents are. They don't give excuses for being around and standing with their defiant teen in their times of need. Showing them your constant love and support without giving in to their unruly demands will surely help you handle problematic situations better. A defiant teen wants you to be there to listen to their issues and concerns and help them overcome their problems.
