- By: Brian Griffin
The human race is in the middle of the information age. This advance in the availability of information was spurred along by the advent of the Internet. People of all ages are surfing the Internet and visiting websites which containing various information. It is at this point that problems begin to arise. Parents must be diligent in their efforts to protect their children and teens from being exposed to potentially harmful material. To combat these dangers, a parent can arm themselves with parent control software designed for just that purpose.
The problem with children and their use of the Internet is their possible exposure to pornography, violence and child predators lurking for possible victims. Identity theft can also be a serious issue. Parental control software can identify some these problems.
The software may help to control one or several of these areas of concern. The software may control by filtering websites. Filtering will keep the computer operator from accessing websites from which contain pornography, violence and any other material that the parent may deem offensive. The software may also perform blocking during the time on the computer. Blocking will halt the downloading of certain software or malware. An example of this would be software used to share files or download music. This would be very important since music downloads can come with viruses and Trojans and may cause the computer to malfunction.
Is there a way to control operating the computer or see what has been done on the computer? The answer is yes. With certain software, a parent can see what the person who has been on that computer has been seeing. The parent control software shows the keystrokes and parent can see what the operator may have written good or bad. It can take picture of the web pages that have been viewed by a child. Many parents do not want the child spending a great amount of time on the computer and Internet. With the purchase of the proper control software can predetermine when and for how long a child or teen can operate the computer.
The question at this point is how much does this protection cost? The answer is that it depends on what functions you want the software to perform. There some programs that can be downloaded for free. A parent may also spend a couple of hundred dollars. The parent may want to compare cost to the functions that the software performs and make a decision accordingly. If a free trial period is available, then by all means take the software for a test drive.
It may be best if the parent speaks to child or teenager about the controls being put on the computer. A teenager may object saying that it an invasion of their privacy. An open and honest discussion of the dangers which are pervasive on the Internet could be the first place to start.
